August 24-28, 2026
(in honor of Duke's birthday)
The Office of Curriculum and Instructional Design (OCID) in partnership with Sidewinder Films is providing access to a free screening of the film “Waterman” based on the life of renowned surfer, swimmer and trailblazer Duke Kahanamoku during the week of August 24-28, 2026 (in honor of Duke’s birthday) for all HIDOE middle level schools with 6th-8th grade students.
“Waterman” provides a rich and relevant example of how the actions of an individual can contribute to the greater good of one’s community through stewardship of the ‘āina and effective leadership attributes aligned to the Nā Hopena A‘o: HĀ framework.
OCID will provide a link to Administrators to coordinate a free screening of the 93-minute film for 7th graders on by August 21, 2026 to share with their classes during the “Waterman Week” of screenings.
Administrators are required to register their schools and identify a point of contact or representative for future communication and resources to be forwarded to.
Please complete the Registration Form no later than July 31, 2026 to receive discussion guides and materials prior to the film’s screening during the Week of August 24 - 28, 2026.
A link to the "Waterman" film (93 minutes) will be made available only on August 21, 2026 for classes and identified by the schoolʻs administrator; Suggested time block is 120 minutes to allow for pre- and post-discussions.
Student permission forms are required to participate in the screening due to the PG-rating; Administrators will customize the template, and teachers will facilitate the collection of forms for participating classes.
Schools are encouraged to coordinate a single group showing (ie: library, cafeteria, multi-purpose room) for participating classes, if possible; or streaming simultaneously in identified classrooms may be arranged.
A point of contact (ie: Administrator or lead teacher) will be issued the link to the film prior to screening to test connectivity. The link is intended for HIDOE school purposes only and should not be shared outside of school screenings.
Schools will be provided with resources and materials to help students engage with the content and messages from the film; Administrators will be asked to provide a headcount/number of students who watched the film after August 28th so data can be reviewed for viability of the event.
Schools are encouraged to capture students/classes watching the film and to share via social media using the hashtag #WatermanFilm, #LeadLikeDuke and @HIDOE808.
