Waterman Movie Day 2025 - Friday, August 22, 2025
The Office of Curriculum and Instructional Design (OCID) in partnership with Sidewinder Films is providing access to a free screening of the film “Waterman” based on the life of renowned surfer, swimmer and trailblazer Duke Kahanamoku on August 23rd (in honor of Duke’s birthday) for all 7th grade classes.
“Waterman” provides a rich and relevant example of how the actions of an individual can contribute to the greater good of one’s community through stewardship of the ‘āina and effective leadership attributes aligned to the Nā Hopena A‘o: HĀ framework.
OCID will provide a link to Administrators to coordinate a free screening of the 93-minute film for 7th graders on August 23, 2024. The link will not be accessible on any other dates.
Opportunity Expectations
Schools need to collect a movie viewing permission forms (https://bit.ly/WatermanMoviePermissionForm) from each student who will view the PG-rated film. Forms should be edited to include the school's letterhead and principal's name.
A link to the 93-minute "Waterman" film will be made available only on August 23, 2024 for 7th grade classes; Suggested time block is 120 minutes to allow for pre- and post-discussions.
Schools are encouraged to coordinate a single group showing (ie: library, cafeteria, multi-purpose room) for participating 7th graders, if possible.
A point of contact (ie: Administrator or lead teacher) will be issued the link to the film on the day of the event; The link to film will be made available from 8:00 am to 3:00 pm.
Schools will be provided with resources and materials to help student engage with the content and messages from the film; Administrators will be asked to provide a headcount/number of students who watched the fil..
Schools are encouraged to capture students/classes watching the film and to share via Twitter using the hashtag #WatermanMovie and @HIDOE808.
